Alabama Launches New “Alabama Career Pathways” Initiative to Strengthen Workforce Pipeline, Unveils Facility in DeKalb County

Legislative leaders, educators and industry partners highlight historic investment in workforce development and unveil statewide CTE strategic plan

RAINSVILLE, Ala. — State elected leaders, educators, students and employers gathered today in DeKalb County to celebrate Alabama’s continued commitment to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and to launch Alabama Career Pathways, a new statewide initiative designed to connect more students with high-quality career opportunities while strengthening Alabama’s workforce for generations to come.

The event highlighted the state’s unprecedented investment in Career and Technical Education, including $100 million appropriated in 2025 to expand and modernize CTE facilities across Alabama, followed by an additional $150 million investment in 2026. 

Made possible in part by this historic financial commitment is DeKalb County’s new Career Technical Education Center, a $40 million, 95,000-square-foot facility located in the Rainsville Industrial Park. Renderings of the state-of-the-art facility were unveiled at today’s event and are attached for your publishing and broadcasting purposes. 

State leaders also unveiled the new Alabama Career Pathways brand and introduced the initiative’s website, which will serve as a central resource for students, parents, educators and employers seeking information about Alabama’s growing network of career pathways.

The event also marked the release of Alabama’s new Career and Technical Education Strategic Plan, a roadmap developed through extensive collaboration between state education leaders, economic developers, employers and industry organizations from across Alabama. The plan is designed to complement broader statewide economic development strategies, including Catalyst, ensuring workforce development efforts remain closely aligned with Alabama’s long-term economic priorities.

House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, who has taken a leading role in spearheading the state’s focus and strategy on CTE, said Alabama’s continued commitment to workforce development is helping position the state for sustained economic success. 

“Every major economic development win begins with a skilled workforce,” Ledbetter said. “The Legislature has made Career and Technical Education a priority because we know these investments create opportunities for students, support Alabama businesses and make our state even more competitive for future job creation. Alabama Career Pathways represents the next chapter in that commitment, and I am proud to see it come to fruition for our state’s students.”

Business leaders emphasized that Alabama’s workforce success depends on continued collaboration between education and industry.

“One of Alabama’s greatest competitive advantages is the willingness of the public and private sectors to work together,” said Jon Barganier, President and CEO of Manufacture Alabama. “Industry helped shape this strategic plan because employers know the skills needed in today’s manufacturing and industrial economy. By bringing education leaders and employers together, we’re ensuring students graduate with the skills businesses are looking for and that Alabama remains a top destination for investment and job creation.”

The event also featured remarks from Nick Sapp, who shared firsthand how Career and Technical Education changed the trajectory of his career.

“Career and Technical Education gave me direction, confidence and skills I use every day,” said Sapp. “It opened doors I never imagined and put me on a path toward a meaningful career. I’m living proof that these programs don’t just teach technical skills – they change lives.”

The Alabama Career Pathways initiative seeks to increase awareness of Career and Technical Education opportunities while helping students identify clear pathways from the classroom to high-demand, high-wage careers across Alabama’s key industries.

The initiative builds upon Alabama’s nationally recognized workforce development efforts by strengthening partnerships among K-12 education, community colleges, employers and economic development organizations.
